Women's Fellowship luncheon / program
thursday, june 20 at 11:30am in St. andrew's hall
"A Window Between Worlds"
Special Speakers: Suvan Geer & Lisa Pearson
A Window Between Worlds (AWBW) is a non profit organization dedicated to using art to help end domestic violence. Since l99l, AWBW has provided creative expression as a healing tool for over 74,000 battered women and their children in crisis shelters, transitional homes, and outreach centers throughout the United States.
We are pleased to have AWBW Board member Suvan Geer as our speaker to explain how providing an environment of art workshops help women and youth to develop a renewed sense of hope and possibility that profoundly impacts future decisions regarding the direction of their lives, their relationships, and how to stay safe. Art empowers survivors to transform how they view themselves, allowing them to see past the abusive messages they learned from their batterers and rebuild their self-confidence.
Through art workshops, survivors express their feelings and reclaim their sense of power and self-worth. As they draw, sculpt, paint and write they begin to make their choices visible and see their dreams take shape. One participant in the program states, “This workshop helped me to envision a future for myself and my children that is beautiful, full of possibilities and happiness.” Another participant, age 8, writes, “I was strong when I went to get help for my mom when my dad was beating her. I am even stronger now because I won’t live that way anymore.”
Lisa Pearson, an experienced AWBW art leader and dedicated volunteer, will present a simple, hands-on art workshop. This interactive art experience will give everyone attending our luncheon an inside understanding of the Windows art process as well as provide a fun, creative time-out from their daily lives. Don’t miss this informative and learning experience.
Great News – all books at our Country Store will be on sale! Don’t miss these special bargains. Plus, the Country Store will feature napkins and greeting cards for every occasion. And don’t forget the beautiful jewelry that will be on display for your shopping pleasure.
A delicious lunch will be served. Reservations may be made at the Women’s Ministries table in the Garth between worship services on Sundays, June 9 and 16 ($5 due at that time). Childcare will be provided by request. Please bring a sack lunch for your child.
(Note: If you have any new or gently used art supplies you would consider donating to this dedicated organization, please bring them to the luncheon. A ‘wish list’ will be available at the sign-up table)
